Obtuse Political Cartoons
Risograph zine, 24 pages, hand assembled, hand cut- imperfections are are part of the charm. General sense of 6×9 to its size.
I took existing political cartoons from the the 1800s from England, France, America, and redraw them. In my recreation I cast all characters as an Inversion Captain America and his enemy The Red Skull. Additionally I used an intuitive emotional approach of collaging and re interprating phrases taken from old advertizing and illustrations.
The resulting melange creates a thing that comes charged with inherent meanings now diverted, centuries of semiotics slamming into each other and what emerges from the cacophony is for the viewer to decide. While I certainly belive that each cartoon “works” I do not have an interest in saying specifically what any one means.
The first three pages were attempts made in 2016, and the remainders were composed in early 2025. There is one cartoon where I am not redrawing any existing political cartoon art, but rather I am redrawing a small thumbnail illustration I had done from a 1960’s comic book. Iterations upon iterations.
